Is this wired correctly? What is it?

    Hello,
I found this on the inside wing on the drivers side. I have a mk1 stag that has an alternator on it. What I don't know is
    1. What is it?
    2. is it wired correctly?
    3. Next to it is a black wire connected to the body of the car. Should this be attatched to the alternaror.

    Thankyou for your help.

Did you mean to post a picture? Need a picture of the connections on your alternator too. I suspect you are talking about the black box with male lucar connects which is the controller for the early 11ac type alternator. It may be that yours has been replaced with an 18AC which doesn't use the separate rectifier, it's internal

      Hello Goldstar,
Yes I did mean to post a picture. This is it. I will post a picture of the alternator at the weekend.

Two wires go into it from the wiring loom. One wire goes from this onto the back of the alternator.

This was my old Mk1 and you can see the alternator relay unit mounted at the top of the suspension strut and the alternator control unit mounted just above the chassis rail. I have also attached part of the Mk1 wiring diagram showing 1. Alternator, 2. Alternator Relay Unit and 3. Alternator Control Unit.

The Mk1 Alternator 11AC was of the type that had external regulator 4TR and an external control relay unit 16RA mounted on the inner wing/turret as in pictures shown.

My 1972 Mk1 had the same until a failure of one of the control units in the early 80's whilst down in south of France. An auto-electrics shop that claimed to be a lucas stockist there said I'd have to wait 2 weeks for a replacement to be shipped from UK so opted for a conversion they offered to do there and then using a Motorola equivalent of the18ACR doing away with both external control units and all the wiring.

It is possible to convert it to the later 18ACR which has all that taken care of internally.

Thankyou for the photo and drawing DJT. Do I take it that the alternator is item 1. ALTERNATOR 2. REGULATOR and 12. ALTERNATOR CONTROL UNIT are the parts on the inside wing? Attached is a photo of the back of the alternator. 20221106_141301.jpg Does this look right?
