    Hello Bruce,

These are the filters that I’ve always used; I think I bought them in Euro Car Parts, or similar outlet.

Nice holiday snaps. Were you touring Cornwall….?

That's the one I have always used. It the one fitted to many VWs, and is available from just about every motor factor.

There are 2 main thread types used on filters, metric and imperial, so any filter with the correct thread can be used its just a case of visiting a good accessory shop or factors and sorting out what you need with respect to size and drain down type

+ 1. Mann filters seem to be recommended by many. I have also used the Mann 719/27. The main difference seems to be the pressure at which the bypass valve opens. Both have non-return valves.

The 27 bypass opens at 15 psi as opposed to 37 psi for the 15. Some Stags never generate 37 psi, but then most Stag owners don't let their filters gum up!

I didn’t know that, Mike. Is the only purpose of the filter bypass valve to ensure continued oil circulation if the filter medium becomes blocked? As you say, most classic owners change the oil & filter more frequently than is probably necessary, so it is generally cleaner; mine only did 600 miles last year

I presume it is. Can't think of any other purpose for the bypass. I have never noticed an increase in pressure after changing the filter, so I would guess we never get near the point of the filter being blocked. But we do know the cost of rebuilding our engines!

I suspect that cold oil also triggers the bypass valve.

My understanding is that the bypass valve in the filter is in case it gets blocked up.

Check youtube vids of various spin on filters being assessed. There is some real crop out there.

I quite like the classic gold paper filters. Less worry about unfiltered oil etc
Stags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony

If I remember correctly, Graham (Staggard) did a survey on these filters and found exactly that. The by pass did not allow the oil to be filtered on certain cartridges.
