Best engine oil for a Stag

Is it best to stick with 20W50 or something that will get round the engine quicker from cold? I can see the sense of the 50 for when it warms up but not sure about the startup. John

    John.
Stick with it for the simple reason that it is the oil that Triumph recommended for the UK climate. As it was for most other engines of the period.

      +1 for mikes reply.

      Avoid low ash low zinc.

      Look for high zinc.

some people have had good results using 20-60.

I buy Smith & Allen 20-50 high zinc in 20 litre cans… seems cost effective.

Classic Oils of Aylesbury stock a wide range of 20W50 oils for your classic vehicle including oil dedicated to the classic Mini. If you're looking for a replacement for Duckhams, we can point you towards the best of the rest!

I like the Heritage 20/50, correct zinc levels, and if you spend over £60 delivery is free so good for your pocket too

+1 for Heritage 20/50. I've heard that Valvoline VR1 is back to its original European spec, i.e. with good zinc levels. if correct, then that's an alternative via Opie Oils.

If you buy 20 or 25 litres online, the cost of an oil change is a quarter of the halfrauds price….cost isn’t everything though.

I've been using the Heritage 20/50 on both our Stag and GT6 for the past 3 years.

I just downloaded the European spec sheet - zinc is quoted at 1500ppm for our local Valvoline VR1 (their spec sheet 025/13b) but it's £10 a gallon more expensive than Heritage.

Smith and Allen classic 20/50 is 1200-1300ppm (I called and asked them) which is perfect and is about £70 for 20l delivered. I use their 5w30 in my Rangie and just about to order some of this.
