    Gearbox no reverse

I have a Stag, not mine, which now has a problem with reverse gear, it kind of slips and clunks. Also overdrive does not work (electrics all ok as solenoid clicks in). Sounds like a replacement gearbox to me, or is there an easier fix? Its a 1972 Mk 1 car with A type overdrive.
    Any advices?

Are you sure the gearbox selector rods have not come out or moved

Saw one with a sheared fulcrum pin once (the fulcrum that actually moves the gear).
Gearbox off & dismantle if it's that.

Overdrive not working is another subject.

Thanks for info, that sounds about right. Working on it!

If it is that, it's p.i.t.a. You would have thought you can just change the fulcrum pin but it's not that simple.
From memory (must be 15 years ago now) you can't get the new pin in with out removing the mainshaft 1st.

Sounds more like the one way clutch in the overdrive is knackered.
The A type overdrive has a nasty habit of destroying the outer ring of the one way clutch where it is pressed into the annulus. I have had two fail in this way. On one of them the steel ring had cracked so it would grip when rollers were forced up the ramps of the centre piece.
On the other the outer ring floated forwards until the rollers fell off the back edge and destroyed the cage that held them in place

I bow to your greater knowledge of A types. Me, I'm J type man.

Although I have changed a cone clutch & operating piston seals on an A type, I always found the J easier understand & to work on.
              Funny things those sprag clutches.
Obviously the A & J are very similar in operation. The J is so much easier to get off / on with the gearbox in situ. Those silly A type springs !!!!!!.
