    Hardtop Trim Clips

I've just been suffering two days of grief and many expletives trying to get the rear lower trim fitted to my refurbished hardtop. There was simply no way that the trim was going to clip over the retaining clips. At first I thought that the lower tongue of the new clips was preventing the trim being able to slip over the clip tops. However, the problem was far more subtle! The picture shows it all. The difference where the bend in the new clips is compared to the originals is scarcely discernible, but has a devastating effect!

Thanks Tony, but I'd rivetted all of mine on before I saw what was happening. Went down the route of modifying the trim strips rather than drilling out 20 rivets. Thanks for the offer though! I'll get back to you on the trim bits themselves.

Until I saw your picture of the trim clips I thought I had a box of the brackets that hold the auto gate to the wood in the console. I still have boxes of parts that I haven’t even looked in yet.Am collecting a job lot of nos stag parts on Saturday all I have seen so far are nos petrol caps and f/r bumpers never been unwrapped from the factory I’ll update you when I unpack the boxes.

            Drew.
Yet another useless remanufactured part. What is the point of making something that doesn't fit? Clearly the parts supplier that had them made couldn't be bothered to see if they were correct before selling them.
Have you got any left to return with a suitable comment?
Perhaps we should get a warning list of such rubbish put on the Club website? (Without saying where they came from of course, as that would not be acceptable.)
            Mike.

Don’t ask where they were from… if you do you’ll be fired (apparently)

That's a difficult call. I fear that Suppliers might say "Sod the hassle with complaints, we just won't stock them anymore". At least I could modify things to make them fit; without Tony around I wouldn't have had any solution, as the older ones were mostly just rust dust.

Regarding "Any left to return", I must admit being concerned that, in the pack containing all the little clips, rivets etc, not a single one was provided with one or two extra. Especially with plastic clips it's not unusual that one or two exit the mould with a slight deformity.

I just got off the phone with Howard over at Bresco. I'm in USA and he calls me at 7pm UK time. What dedication! He mention he has KIT38P which is the complete hardtop kit which he is keeping for me. He mentioned he is making a new tool to make these clips up as the old tool had worn out. He supplies the metal rear clip to Rimmer and James Paddock.

Nice that a supplier admits that there is a problem and is correcting it. Assuming that he is the single source for these items (can't imagine several companies doing this rather seldom used clip).Wonder if he only discovered that the tool was worn out after the stuff that I (and maybe others) put together. I should note that I bought my clips around 8 years ago, so that would sort of imply that the tool was already worn then.

Oh. You've got me thinking. You didn't bad mouth where you got the clips from , but I can only assume it is one of the places mentioned in my email. Maybe I should wait until he makes teh new tool and then order my kit. However, someone in this forum did mention he got the kit from Bresco and they didn't run into issues.

We'll probably now discover that, like the windscreen trim, there are early and late hardtop trims!!
