    Electric Wndows

Last night I decided to start tacking my electric window issue on. The drivers side, Fed. '71, doesn't go up or down, but eventually does. I'm suspecting its a mechanical issue, but am not ruling out an electrical issue, The passengers side works OK I swapped out the switch with a spare, but no difference. However, I did dismantle the switch, lost a spring, but had a spare. Good clean and dielectric grease and the switch works wonderfully. I haven't gotten to the root problem yet, but here are a few questions, in the wiring diagram of the switch point 7 and point 2 are grounds. Would anyone have a clue where this ground would lead to on the car? Is this ground shared with the other window switch?

My drivers side window sometimes doesn't go up (or down). There's no electrical problem outside the window motor, I've got good voltages at the twowires in the door, so I suspect that the motor itself is dodgy. I have dismantled it in the past but it may be the commutator that is tired, so I've sourced a replacement passenger side one to make a rebuild.

I mechanically overhauled my leccy windows, only to find the issue was actually high resistances in the various joints and connectors (and there are a few) in the wires feeding them. Voltage looked fine at the motor connections until you tried to operate it, then it plummeted.

mole42 - is your "good" voltage with a load on?
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Yes. I made sure of that - a headlamp bulb lights brightly whichever way the switch is pushed. I can see all the crud that was at the bottom of the door too!

Here's an update. I directly applied 12 volts from the battery to the motor at 2 points. 1 in the door directly on the motor wires and then at the switch. I also by-passed the switch with jumper wires. At the same time, I greased up the track at the bottom and applied silicon spray on the felt. The window goes down and up. I did this in the afternoon. Since the stuck window happens when its cold, this morning I tried it at 40 degree F and it still goes down and up. I did this all with the engine off. I dismantled and cleaned the switch. The switch operated very smoothly now. I'm going to leave the door panel off for a few weeks and monitor it. I plan to look at the length of bolts holding the motor on the door.
