74 Stag ... registered 1988 due to export to Jersey

HI all ....can any one help. a year ago I purchased a 1974 Triumph Stag N plate that had been garaged since 1990 with engine in place but manifolds stripped spare engine purchased with sale . I have a letter from British Motor industry Heritage Trust Acknowledging the Authenticity of the stags registration on 10th feb 1975 .The vehicle then went to Jersey. I have a copy of the Motor Vehicle Certificate from Jersey showing the New Jersey registration . The vehicle then came back to England in 1988 run until 1990 then garaged ....there it sat for thirty Years with its now number plate allocated by DVLA. when I purchased and sent off the old log book. the new one came back and it is showing registered and /or used declared Manufactured 1975 then inside it reads. Date of first Registration 1988.
Question 1....... Considering this vehicle is clearly a 1974 built ,1975 first registered . with its now 1974/5 N registration on the new log book .....can I request that this vehicles log book can be changed or because of the exporting and importing I have to except its new registering of 1988 on the vehicles details 2nd page of the log book
Question 2....... This vehicle is clearly a 1974/75 vehicle am I going to have to pay road tax until it reaches its 41st year

    Many Thanks Vic

Vehicle Excise Duty (Road Tax) is zero for vehicles with a taxation class of Historic Vehicle. Check the V5C (log book) and see what it says for taxation class, if it says "Historic Vehicle" then it will be £0, i.e. free, you still need to "tax it" but it will be at a NIL rate. If the taxation class is not "Historic Vehicle" then you can get it changed as it is based on date of manufacture and NOT date of first registration. Either go to a Post Office and a "competent" member of staff should know how to sort it for you. Failing that you will have to fill section 1 (blue) of the V5C, "Tax class" and send it off to the DVLA, I would include a covering letter and photocopies of your other paperwork to "assist" them, but it shouldn't be needed as their own records already have the correct date of manufacture. They should return it with the updated tax class and then you can then tax it at the NIL rate. I have done this with numerous vehicles, including one in a similar situation to yours - exported then reimported - and never had an issue.

In my experience the DVLA is not always as bad as a lot would have you believe, not to say they don't make mistakes, but my experiences have only been good.
