Mine used to get 32mpg when I was driving, 38mpg when my co-driver was at the helm. That's using a ZF 4HP22 auto gearbox and a 3.45:1 rear axle. Nowadays it's not quite that economical, manual + overdrive and a 3.7:1 rear axle I'd be happy with 30mpg. But then, I drive quite hard, not economically. But that's also not an average Stag.....Richard

Just checked my notes. ZF car I had did an average of 24 mostly round town/local drubbing. Manual I have now (although abou to be a ZF) 28 on the run back from Cornwall to fetch it (65-75mph) and 23 local driving. Both with 3.71 diffs and strombergs.Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

Back when my car was standard and driven hard about 18mpg as an original auto. That lifted to about 25mpg when I fitted a manual overdrive box, but to be fair the carbs did need a rebuild as I found when they were fitted to another car.Neil

It does seem to depend very much on the the length of run and temperature. On summer trips out from home I get around 30 mpg. I do only use my car in warmish weather and I tend to do runs of 10 miles plus.
On long journeys I can get up to 38 mpg over a leg of the journey. I do the same trip to southern France every year and I get an overall average for the trip (about 1900 miles) of 34 mpg. The mileage is about 650 miles down over two days, then 600 miles driving around whilst there (20- 40 mile trips) and 650 miles back. That will be a lot of 40-60 mph driving and some 70mph on motorways. The glory of the Lot in France is almost no traffic lights and no traffic, so it is pretty perfect driving conditions.
Like all petrol cars, mpg is very much worse when the engine is cold. That is why I do recommend using the air pre-heat system (on MKII cars). It really does reduce the engine warm up time.
