    starter motor

    Hi Guys,



    i have a starter motor that just gives one click and does not turn the engine over? am i right in thinking its on the way out, i turn the ignition 5 or 6 times before it actually turns the engine over, she then fires up no problems at all,

    your help please

    I had the same problem, as do most stag owners. there is not enough power getting to the starter. EJ Ward due a kit for approx £20.00 that will cure this problem once and for all, well it did with mine.

                thanks guys what can i say, did the same to my ERF at about 5 every morning, only got short arms too lol, i dont think my piece of scaffold pole is about anymore either.

                will be in touch with Mick at wards, had an idea it was something like that.

                      I had this many years ago, and the problem was the contacts in the starter solenoid. Once cleaned its been fine ever since...

                          I have cleaned the contacts in a couple of solenoids.

                          To remove the end cap of the solenoid and get at the contacts you need a serious soldering iron or traditional blowlamp heated solid copper type

                          Pull the cap off as you melt the solder(you may have to wriggle it off one side at a time). Inside you will find a copper bar that is pushed into the contacts by the movement of the solenoid plunger. these will often be blackened and burned, but are easily cleaned up with some emery cloth.If they are seriously burned or pitted you may have to replace the solenoid anyway

                          Reassembly is the reverse of removal

                          FWIW I once had a solenoid cap replaced by a local auto electrician for about a third of the cost of a complete solenoid, but it was about 20 years ago, dont know if anyone does that sort of thing these days
