    Carbs Misfires etc

Since the Xmas lights trip in December I have been adjusting the carbs as I was getting strong petrol smells.

We have rebuilt the carbs using a spare set that we had. eventually after much faffing about the car was running fine.

A sixty mile trip no problems the car as good as ever. Then after a TSSC meeting at the begining of the month the engine just stopped running. Leave it a couple of minutes it started and I was able to limp home needing to use the choke to gain enough power to get up hills as it was running very rough. Left it a week and although it started fine is was misfireing again after 2-3 miles. Tried it again today did a 20 mile trip with no sign of any problems.

    Confused

That's a lovely photograph of a lovely car ! Showoff ! It does rather sound like fuel starvation, if you're happy with the pump and the pipes, and the inertia awitch,it could be our old friends the needle valves, I've come to the conclusion you can't get desent ones any more. There is a way to check them before reassembly if you go that route. Martin.

      Thanks Martin

I have just treated myself (with a staff incentive at work)to a new camera.

Wehave been working on fuel starvation but I can't make it go wrong when I'm able to have a proper look at it. The needles had crud on them and have been cleaned up the other set looked perfect I but couldn't get the car to run at all with them.

      Sorry couldn't resist another pic

You're absolutley right. Butthe rewards points were from a supplier and had to takethem as product.

Funds permitting I would love to change them

            Great photos Phil,
Reminds me what I am working towards again - my Topaz is currently turning into a rather expensive box of bits

            Some day ...:?

                Hi Phil

I think you have a fuel delivery problem rather than a carb problem, check fuel pump pressure is enough and filters are not blocked also tank is vented.

the fuel pump seems ok whenever I check it. I've ordered replacement filters. Thinking about it there was no filter fitted in the boot but horrible petrol smells.

Will have another look at the weekend

Worth checking the bottom of the tank has not gone porous, common problem but a different one that you are trying to cure.

Sorry that wasn't clear. Petrol smell before fitting the filter in the boot
but it might be that these problems started since, I can't remember

Bob's probably right about porocity, but before you pull the tank, have a look at the top of it, and see if you have a short stubby pipe sticking up, open to atmosphere, if you do, put a piece of petrol pipe on it and block the end with a well fitting bolt. These tanks were shared with the PI estate and that's the injection fuel return pipe.

The fuel filter in the boot only acts as a flame trap in the overflow, petrol rarely passes through it. Martin.
