Gearbox, input shaft movement

Hi All, taking a look at the gearbox that came with my project. The input shaft has significant amount of side to side movement… I know that there will always be some play until the end of the shaft is fitted into the pilot bush in the flywheel but how much is acceptable…?

If the bearing is toast. Rimmers list two options for the bearing one is 58391 then they list a more expensive option 58391RHP, https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-58391RHP which one is correct ?

Both are correct, one needs an extra large circlip, but you should be more concerned about bearing 158368.

Use the best quality bearing. ( probably Rhp as timken are nla ) press it onto the shaft on inner race only. Press it into the case with suitable tools on the outer race only.
Notorious for growling noise if you don’t, especially in neutral without any clutch load.

As above, avoid the cheap bearings. You definitely get what you pay for

So I measured the side to side movement and had about 2-2.5mm is this to be expected seeing as the input shaft is unsupported until inserted into the flywheel ?

That would not bother me, it’s a single row deep groove bearing & quite a long shaft.
check for notchiness & radial lash.
If you still doubt it, change it now…. Later will be a complete disassembly again.
