    syncro wear - what’s acceptable

Hi all stripped out the gearbox (manual) today. To the naked eye I thought the syncro teeth looked fine. A close up pic does show some wear to the tips but not sure if it’s enough to consider new gears. I was going to change the brass baulk rings regardless…

That wear looks about typical and shouldn't cause any problems.

I would go for the premium Bastuck synchro rings rather than the standard ones, I have had far better results which makes them worth the extra cost.

Thanks Neil, thats the answer I was hoping for ! can you advise where I can order the Bastuck rings in the UK ? also when it comes to all the roller bearings I am not sure if there is a way to check if these need replacing, any advice would be welcome !

Rimmers sell the Bastuk synchro rings, they list them as the premium ones on their website.
I think Revington TR supply the same ones as there is only 6 pence difference in the price.

Checking the bearings is rather subjective. My prefered method is to wash them out with petrol then spin the bearing while it is still on the shaft. It should turn pretty silently with no feeling of grittiness, the sound being the most important as by the time you can feel the roughness the bearing is usually pretty knackered. I find the input shaft bearing wears fastest as it is always under load.
        Cheers

I'd replace all the needle roller bearings anyway & also the layshaft if any sign of wear.

get the high quality bearings from one of the online or ind. estate suppliers. There is a world of chinesium bearings that will wear out too quickly.
