    Dismantling starter motor

I have a spare old starter motor that I'm trying to dismantle. The problem is the bendix is stuck on the shaft due to rust and non use. I have removed the solenoid two long bolts holding the end caps on. Each half is partially off, but is now stuck which I'm thinking is due to the bendix. But am not sure. Do I need to free the bendix or do I need to use a bigger hammer?

Can I apply heat as well as penetrating oil to free it? Once It moves, will I be able to separate the two end caps?

Also, The ROM says the remove a fiber washer on the end, I don't see a fiber washer, just a metal one. Should this slide off. There was a serrated washer in the end, but that fell off again due to rust.

Some observation, the copper nuts on the solenoid are metric and so are the bolts holding the solenoid to the starter motor. The solenoid says LUCAS. Is this normal?

Is that brush end cap stuck to the commutator shaft it should come off?

The body and coils should then come off the back. In front of the Bendix mech is what can be described as a clip retaining cover, see photo this has to be knocked down towards the clip to reveal the clip which needs to be removed carefully as you will need to reuse it, then the bendix mech will come off the front and can be cleaned, DO NOT OIL , use graphite powder or a pencil lead. oil etc will pick up all the dust etc and make it sicky.

The 73 ROM and 77 show the wrong starter diagram (bushes on top of commutator) not on the end as photos

Clean commutator with (GLASS paper) not wet and dry., I skimmed mine on a lathe

While you are doing this you may as well disassemble the solenoid and clean the contacts, easy to do if you have a reasonable soldering iron

the little copper tag on the second photo is the contact that gives you the 12volt zing for your coil on starting, if you need anymore photos I have a few.

You need to make this into a PDF so that drew could save it to the tech docs.

                  Excellent work MandM

                    Yeah 100 %
And if the ignition switch is ok, no need to fit snake oil relays or fandango starter motors .

This info alone is probably worth annual subscription.

The washer under the star washer was stuck solid on the end of the shaft. I applied oil and then heat. The end cap is off.

I removed the pin at the front and now the front cover is off. The bendix has freed itself. The windings and stuff in side are in a poor shape. They are badly corroded. I will keep the starter for spares.
                        Thanks all.

Mine looked like this covered in crap , carbon dust etc, a gentle good clean sorted it, no rust bad though.

Thanks Martin, this is a really useful guide to overhauling a starter motor.
