Heads are currently off. Smeared engine oil around bore which last night left a puddle of oil resting up against the pistons. This morning, I reckon some cylinders have less oil than I left them with.
Should I expect the rings to prevent ANY oil seeping past?
Am going to see how much is being lost by cleaning out what is there. Decanting 10ml into each. Leaving overnight again and seeing if there are differences in levels.
The engine was rebuilt around 3k miles ago ... so it would be an unpleasant surprise if this is going to be a problem.
It wasn't burning a lot of oil before head removal. I have not moved the pistons since heads came off. Cylinder 1 does have some unexpected marks and up/down scratches (perhaps a dodgy spark plug replacement dropped some detritus in??).
What is the best way to clean between the piston/bore and rings? A strong air jet perhaps? This of course could just make things worse by compacting the detritus further in.
The plugs were not all oily when they came out ... a little black, yes, but not oily ... although you do start imagining stuff. I can't imagine that all rings have gone, and certain plugs were not noticeably worse than others on removal.
Did it burn oil? Well, the oil was clean when drained, it has never needed topping up between changes. I have only ever noticed blue smoke ONCE. Ironically the last time I ran it before the heads had to come off.
Oh, I've jsut checked the plugs again ... one is much blacker and there is swarf on the thread .... a smoking gun perhaps ... now where would that have come from?
I may be in trouble then ... thoughts?
