I have been led to believe that the ZF4 box does not need topping up. I have never been able to see any fluid marking on the dipstick whatever mode I am in when testing.
I’m sure my dipstick had marking on my last ZF. I have one in the shed to fit to a different car - I’ll check the dipstick for you (and for my own sanity tbh)

These are the instructions I received from Russel that Clive has stated
Hello Martin
Please see below a copy of clive instructions for checking the gearbox oil level.
To check the level, from cold, start the engine move the gear lever forward and back, turn off the engine. Pull out the dipstick and wipe clean, push back in and take a reading. The level should be just on the end of the stick. Take no notice of the hot and cold marks. Should you need to add any (unlikely) its Dextron 2 or 3
hope that helps
"The UK,s 2nd Most Easterly Stag" Quad Exhaust- ZF 4 Speed BOX
Cheers Guy's. I will try that. My Dipstick from the top of the flexible part just below the top cup to the end of the hot/cold flat end is 350mm. Is this correct?
These are from the dip stick that came with my box fitted by Clive Tate, the oil level checking instructions are from the same man. I suppose the dip stick length will depend on what vehicle your box comes from.
Thanks MandM. I have used a piece of wire to find the actual level of fluid in my pipe which is 480 mm from the top, no too far from your stick settings. My stick is only 350 long, miles too short. The box is hot at the moment so I will try again cold as previously instructed.
I noticed during my search that Land Rovers with this box have a fill/level hole in the side of the box. I have looked but cannot find one on mine. It would be handy if I could check it this way.
Here is the advice I had from Clive Tate after he did the conversion on my Stag.
”It’s a bw dipstick with a zf gearbox and a Tate and Lewis dipstick tube so you do not use the graduations.
From cold start the engine and move the lever through the gears, stop the engine, remove and wipe dipstick, insert, remove and take a reading.
As long as there is oil showing on the end of the stick that is fine.
Do not add oil unless necessary as if overfilled the gearbox will blow it out of the breather onto the exhaust and leave a huge cloud of smoke.”
DMT.
The dipstick in your photo looks like a BW one, but those in M&M and DJT’s are ZF dipsticks which seal well.
The length of stick depends on length of filler tube which varies in different applications and which side the filler is, which would explain the large difference in lengths you found.
