    Mystery wires

Just been trying to fit a modern radio and the wiring diagram in my workshop manual seems to be a bit of an approximation, which combined with the fact that the car was previously converted from auto to manual o/d means that the wires behind the centre console only bear a faint resemblance to any diagram.

There was a red wire scotchlocked to a purple (perm live) and the red wire is in an original lookingharness with a black which disappear rearwards along the left of the transmission tunnel - the black had a connector not connected to anything. I disconnected the red and nothing disasterous has happened - does anyone know where these red and black wires go if they are standard? The radio switched feed comes from a white (doesn't seem to have a pink tracer) from the harness to the left of the clutch pedal - is the proper pink/white radio feed supposed to be somewhere near there, or did Triumph sometimes use plain white for the radio feed?

    Thanks, John.

Can't help a lot with the wires that you're finding but I found the easiest way was to connect the switched and unswitched power wires directly to the back of the fuse panel. Over the years so many bits get wired in by one owner and then removed by the next so it can be difficult to find the original bits.

The black wire going back along the tunnel might be for the handbrake light?? but it's obvious whether or not that works. John

      Ethel,

The black wires should be earths. Maybe you've found the lighting circuit for the automatic gear selector illumination. This should be red/white for power from the panel rheostat that controlls the instrument lighting and black for the earth. Linking the red (possiblt with a dirty white?) to the purple permanently live by Scotchlok doesn't seem to be a very clever idea if used for a lighting circuit.

      FWIW

On mine, by the drivers right foot I have found a White wire with a pink tracer so it does exist on mine ('77 MKII). There was also a red wire with a yellow tracer. I can't find it in any of the wiring diagrams but I believe it is in the loom for the fitment of fog lights.

The Red/Yellow makes sense, I have these unused at the front grill on my '76.

I found this site the other day, it shows the typical wiring colours used by Lucas.

There's an unused connector from a red/white down near the white I originally mentioned, I guess this might be the auto selector illumination feed. Anyway I've got the radio so it works and remembers the time - all I need to do now is find a way of moving the mass of wires, connectors and adaptors out of the way so I can push the unit back so it's flush with the fascia

Thanks Dave - it's a shame the previous owners didn't use it as well

The wires for the stereo are behind the carpet on the gearbox tunnel on the drivers side, pull carpet down from the top and BINGO,glad to hear you got the stereo working anyway

I have just replaced my centre console and moved the bulky radio cable under the heater behind the ash tray with the large conector just behind the light onthe passenger side this left enough room for the radio to click in and still be able to get at the wires as well
