    Carb pedestal valve

As I'm going though my carbs, I have taken this valve apart to clean it, it has a spring and ball in it, with the spring in the lower part it seems not to work as a one way valve, but with the spring removed it does, now should it have a spring? it's a very fine spring.

A fine spring is in there. I have blocked mine off. The vacuum flap in the air filter box doesn't work.

I have just a connector on my carb pedestal, same as this one https://socspares.co.uk/store/engine...rburettor.html

i dont think it is a one way valve, however I admit to not testing it. Though I did replace mine last year only because the hex flange was rounded by a po. And I cannot find that part number ukc8848 listed anywhere.

        APS.
That SOC spares part is to take the vacuum advance pipe to the distributor, and screws in to the left hand carburettor. The one in the M&M picture is for the air valve in the duct to the air filter box.

Ah, my mistake. Thank you for the correction. Strange I cannot find ukc8848 listed though

Will have another fiddle and see if I can get it working

Looks like there was a change at LF11429E

I havent looked but am reasonably sure that mine is doesn't have any non return stuff in it. as such it has a small lenth of vacuum pipe attached which is blocked up with a screw

Looks like quite a clever little failsafe device? If the vacuum pipe slips off, the air flow would cause the ball to block it off, so it doesn't draw air in and weaken the mixture. Try it and see......

Ok found it as listed by rimmers as non-return valve part number 614866A.....nla

I do recall now getting a very strong vacuum through this as it opens the hot air flap in air filter box. Surprised to find mine was still operational so kept it as is. If you do not use the hot air hose then you can probably just plug it.

The non-return valve probably only needed to protect the flap operating valve in the air box in event of a backfire.

Sorry should have added that there is a temperature valve in the vacuum circuit before the flap operating valve, so it is this that is probably protected by the non-return valve.

I just took one off a pedestal I happen to have to hand. There is a non return element to it. Blowing through the pointy bit, I get no restriction, blow through the threaded end and there is a restriction although not 100% blocked ie there is a slight leak through whatever "valve" is in there

I recently rebuilt my carbs and mine is not a one way valve....

it's a simple vavle. when there is manifold vacuum the ball bearing is sucked in .and allows vacuum to the device under the air filter box and then to the flap in the airbox. The spring is super small I think it's purpose is to close off the manifold to stop dirt getting in I would assume.

Apparently used on Range Range Rover Classic 1986 - 1991 and Defender 1987 - 2006 but out of stock at Land Rover stockists as well as Triumph, where listed they seem to cost from about GBP 14 - 20 incl. VAT. This picture is from the Britcar website. I did buy one of these but that was a long time ago, I never was totally sure sure why I needed it but it seemed like a good idea at the time ...
