How To Stop Speedo Needle From Bouncing Around

Does anyone have a cure for a bouncy speedo needle? It’s not too bad but at about 70 can move around a bit.

remove inner cable from the outer sleeve, clean it, re-lubricate it gently and reinstall.

If that doesn't fix it then speedycables or any number of other gauge shops will refurbish the speedo head for you

      +1

When I received my new speedo cable from Speedycables they mentioned don't grease it as the grease can work it's way up the cable into the speedo and damage it.

      As mentioned, a light lubrication.

I have a graphite type lube which is applied and then wiped away.

one thing I should add is that and heavy bends in the outer cable will also interfere with speedo operation

As Richard says, check the entire run of the cable to ensure that the curves necessary are very generous with the largest radii possible.
          The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

Many years ago I had a mk III Escort for which the local garage replaced the clutch. I think they must have blocked the vents to prevent oil loss whilst they tipped the engine to get at the clutch. The net result was that over time oil worked its way up the speedo cable until it formed a lake under the carpet. I did eventually twig where the smell of oil was coming from! There was no way I could get rid of the smell, so the car was traded in.

I used to own a Rover P4. The speedo needle had a regular dipping motion. This was due to lack of lubrication of the odometer mechanism. I can't remember details of the cure but it involved removing the speedo head from its case to lubricate it with a little oil - I used clock oil. The Rover P4 Guild produced a "Black Book" detailing tips and repairs for known problems. The Stag speedo looks very similar so if anyone would like me to scan the Black Book for the repair I will do this.

A scan would be great as I have the same unwelcome feature.

Thanks Paul, I don't know if I have the finesse to explore the inner workings of the speedo. I will send it away as previously suggested.

Ok Steve. I found I only needed to do the first part and the needle was much steadier

Speedy Cables refurbed my speedo but when I put it back in the car it doesn't work. This is the second time this has happened to me, Paul at Stag Classics sorted it out the first time. What am I doing wrong? i thought I had located the gearbox end correctly as the inner wouldn't turn and the speedo end was positively located, how can it not work ?
Any advice appreciated or it's back to Paul.
