    gear stick

When stripping the car down, I removed the gear lever to find a gnarled up spring sticking out of the bit that engages with the selectors. All these years later, I've spent this evening trying to refit the lever, spring and plunger. After several hunts around the garage for the plunger that refuses to stay in place while it being inserted, I gave up before I became a *#{^%$£ nuisance to the neighbours, no, to the neighbourhood!

Anyone done the same with success, any tips, please, I need the encouragement!

Been there and done it. Any more?

Here's another question. The plunger is flat one end and slightly conical the other, I've assumed that the pointy bit aids location onto the spring and into the lever hole, however, should it be the other way around to aid the movements across the selector gates? Would a ball bearing do just as well?
