I will remove the manifold and find out exactly what is wrong.
I don't know Dave. I re-fitted the manifold after I had removed the water pump, and don't recall any problem with the casting. No ally bits have been found in the valley (of death).
It has taken me an age to find where the noise was coming from. I used an endoscope in the end. It is only whistles when the engine is hot. I assume the noise is
the gasket vibrating, but no water leak. It is under the LHS rear port near the locating lug. I have temporarily plugged it with Tiger Seal.

Julian, I have fitted an external water pump, so just removed the original vanes, plugged and re-fitted original cover. I did have to fit the thinnest manifold gaskets I could find to get the manifold holes to line up with the corresponding holes in the heads.

Good… replacement wp cover can stop the manifold from sitting down correctly. By quite a lot!
