Hi everyone, I am about to overhaul the rear suspension but I’m not sure what the best options of shocks to put on are and the where the best place is to get new springs. Can anyone advise please
thanks in advance
Rick
Rick.
Does it actually need new springs? The originals seem to last very well, and I still have them on my car. Replacements can be very troublesome as you may have read on this Forum. If yours really need replacing, I gather the ones from SOC Spares give the correct ride height.
Mike.
Hi Rick, I am currently undertaking the same project on my stag. Following consensus on this forum I have gone for KYB shocks. I also followed advice from here and kept my original springs as my car was already sitting at the correct height and I did not want to start messing about and ending up with some of the issues others have had.
I shopped around with most items, bushes, hardware etc coming from either Chris Witor or Paddocks. The kyb shocks I bought from a supplier off eBay as they were a lot cheaper than any of the traditional stag suppliers.
I have encountered project creep so it is taking me much longer than anticipated. Once I removed the suspension I have rebuilt the rear brakes, new brake lines, cleaned up the wheel arches and refreshed the stone chip and over painted body colour.
I have everything powder coated, including the old springs and it is all now ready to refit. Just a bit cold in the garage at the moment but I will be starting soon.

Chris Witor has parts that fit & work.
Most others seem to be a lottery at best or irritating sequence of doing the job 3 times over with wrong or bad parts.
I’m going to need to do a rear suspension soon, too. I was just going to purchase all the rubber bits from Rimmers. Has there been any supplier problems with Rimmers? I’m not interested in poly and want rubber anyway. What’s the consensus on parts houses, for these parts?
Cheers,
CW

Be prepared to change the rubber bits every couple of years. They do not last. Poly is available in several hardness (shore) grades. The Stag I have now was fitted with (purple) poly when I bought it in 2008. I have done over 50,000 miles since then and they are still in good condition with a compliant ride.

I have superflex polybushes via Chris Witor, SOC Spares springs, plus KYB shocks sourced online. All good and all have made a big improvement to handling stability and ride. Various clunks from before have gone.
Quick question guys, I am refitting my rear suspension and have it powder coated. When bolting the trailing arm shackles to the subframe should I be removing the paint where they fit or not to worry about the layer of paint ? I recall this area not painted before, just some grease that prevented the shims from rusting. I have noted where and how many shims are fitted.
Beware having springs blasted & coated.
Most (sharp) blasting media will create many fatigue spots.
If you do, the media has to be very very fine.
Chemical stripping may be better for springs.
Thanks Sujit, I will keep the paint in place under the shackles.
Warning noted Julian, my springs are already painted now. Time will tell, just another item on the long worry list,
Sand blasted springs
drag struts
diff nose extension
stub axles
rear hub failure
uj's
expansion bottle leak
overheating!
sure I skipped a few, and the list goes on.
I must remember to put some of these at the back of my mind or I will not be able to enjoy the car.
