    Aluminium header tank

    Hi all ,
new to the club and to owning a stag ,mine has an aluminium header tank , and a Ken Lowe radiator, my question is how much water should be in the tank ? The original plastic expansion bottle is still in the loop also . Thans all

50 to 60 per cent full , allowing room for water expansion

You can hardly make a mistake here. If you overfill your header tank, the excessive water is "thrown out". I would suggest to install a level control with a buzzer - for the peace of mind!
      Best wishes from Germany,

Hi and welcome to the forum

Depends on which "header" tank you have. there are a few out there, some are more useful than others. can you share a photo of your tank so we can better advise.

Also the original expansion tank still in the loop sounds odd, I am not sure that it will add anything to the party.

I would have thought the original expansion bottle would be a much bigger liability than the gain of having it.

I assume the theory would be any air let into the system via a leaking expansion bottle would be removed by the expansion tank.

So this is how the set up is , new aluminium header tank and the old plastic expansion bottle. would you recommend getting rid on the old expansion bottle? Thanks

I am no expert, but would remove it.

I would firstly investigate whether the “header tank” has been plumbed in correctly… maybe it’s no header tank - just a shiny thing!

Looks like a "Wards" tank - if so it should have the bespoke "Y" shaped top hose. Impossible to fit incorrectly, and the overflow can go into the original expansion tank - if the cap on that is modified to stop it creating any pressure.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Are you sure the original expansion bottle is still in the loop , I have the Ward header tank , I have just left the original expansion bottle in place , just because it fills the space left ,but not connected in any way , do you have the Y shaped top hose ? regards Graham
