getting the blower & HRW switches and the choke off

I'm about to take out my dash and replace the wood fascia, but I can't figure out how to get the electrical switches and the choke out of the centre console........

Do the knobs come off? have tried pulling without success, also tried to twist / un screw - no luck with that either. Am I going to have to undo the choke at the carb end and pull the whole thing through (cable and all)??

They look to be the original ones in a MK1. Have got the fag lighter off and the HRW light looks straight forward.

Dont want to force and break - advice please?

If it's like mine, yep. Knob can't be separated. There are some different versions about where the knob is retained by a pip pin or a grub screw.

If I remember back 15 years, the knob and all the cables had to be pulled out. Can be a pig to get back. I think I renewed them.

Just removed my choke cable yesterday, which is nice. Luckily I dont have a radio fitted so was easy to see what to do.

Pull the knob to its fully extended position, twist and lock the choke in position. The chrome bezzle is screwed so gently unscrew, there is a large nut on the rear of the choke so need to completely remove this nut. The switch for the choke "On" light is clipped in position onto the choke cable, so with a smallish screw driver un-ping the clip. The whole of the choke cable can be removed.

On my heated screen switch and blower switch and choke knob there was a very small hole somewhere on the side behind the 'face' of the knob. Insert a small implement or nail into this hole todepress a plunger and then the knob just pulls off.

All the chrome escutchelons (don't you just love that word ) then unscrewed and came off.

thanks guys - I seem to have a mixture - choke is a pull the whole thing through, blower seems to have a tiny whole (will investigate tomorrow), but HRW seems to have nothing(no holes??) - any ideas?

The only thing I'd say is that I couldn't see the holes at first.

I was sure they were there from when I worked on the cars 35 years ago but when I couldn't see the holes I began to doubt my memory.

A second look revealed another hole but I had all but given up on the third one. I disconnected all the wires and took the panel out with the blower switch still attached and it was only after I'd done that that I found the hole :shock:

Wouldn't it be easier to remove the centre console and remove the bits afterwards? Much less hassle than trying to mess around with it in the car.

Having just done this.I have to agree much less likely to damage anything
