    Which anti freeze

I appear to have green antifreeze in the stag and it runs oktemperature wise. Local shops only have blue and red available. Both these colours tell me they will protect the car from the next ice age but dont tell me if they have anti corrosion protection. I dont care about the cold, just the internal decay.

Should I keep looking for the green or flush and go for Blue. Think Red may not mix with Green if flushing is not 100%?

You can get the properUnipart antifreeze from Rimmer etc which is garanteed to be the right one.

I know what you mean about the others being confusing as to weather they give the correct protection for the Stag engine!

I've always bought the one from Rimmer just to be on the safe side.

You can get this from any Unipart outlet, usually at a discount if you blag it at the counter.

Be careful with mixing some types of anti-freeze. 'Modern' antifreeze is OAT (don't ask me what it means) and I have heard of problems if changing back to glycol-based as this can cause formation of a thick goo. Last thing you need in the cooling system.

There is some history of this on triumphstag.net as Peter Howells suffered this problem if I recall correctly.

You need the blue glycol based anti-freeze. The red one is a long life usually used in newer cars, Audi for instance use it. The red and blue react with each other, do not use red, it clears out the pores in the casting that have been filled over the years and can lead to blockage in the cooling system, the one thing we try to avoid.

OAT = Organic Acid Technology. Long life antifreeze, usually pink or red, not to be mixed with normal stuff. Usually green or blue.

I've read somewhere that the red OAT is alive hence the organic part of the name and if put in an engine which isn't used for long periods problems can occure as there is no heat to kill off the growth of the stuff. Also i read that you can go from green to red ok,but you must get rid of the red with a chemical flush before going back to green .

Hope i havn't worried you too much Kev.

Don't panic, I've had OAT in my system for two years with no problems. There is some comment out in the field that the Pink Stuff attacks lead solder used in radiators. I am suitably informed that products meeting the British Standard will not attack solder. However it must be up to owners to satisfy themselves on this point., Bob is correct, you should not revert to ethylene glycol without a proper and thorough chemical system flush.

Typical, what did I do on Saturday, yes, emptied a large quantity of cooling system and added the Halfords Pink 5 year guaranteed anti freeze. Its says its eth something Glycol.

i don't mind getting rid of it and its only done about 2 miles to warm up. should I get rid of it now? don't mind the expense.

                  Cheers

Now it's in you might as well run with it, you could do more harm than good changing back!

I think PeterH (ldparts)is running OAT in his Stag, It was discussed at length here:

I've just bought 5 litres of the Halfords pink 5 year stuff - the only thing they seem to sell. It says it is a "silicate free Organic Acid formula..." (OAT?) but it also says that it contains ethylene Glycol. The comments here seem to suggest that antifreeze is either one or the other, this seems to be both!

My current antifreeze colour is black which doesn't tell me much other than I need to change it ASAP!

OAT is stillethylene glycol based, if you google 'hybrid oat' you will find plenty of information on it.

Now the Halfords pink/red stuff is in I'm going to have to live with it, if my engine dissolves or the coolant sets like jelly you will all read about it here, if asI suspect everything is fine I'll just flush and replace it with the same stuff every few years or so:?
