Triumph Stag Differential

Hello,
Can anyone tell me what is the main cause if diff whine at 50-60 mph in 4th overdrive. I had this in a Sprint too but looking at an exploded view drawing, there are several bearing in each diff. I noted that reconditioned diffs are advertised as having a new crown wheel and pinion. Is this the main culprit?

The first thing I would change is the quill shaft bearing. Mine had a whine at about 40mph so having just changed it I’ll be interested to see if I’ve solved it. The bearing I took out was past it’s best for sure-buy the expensive RHP or SKF brands (LD PARTS)

They all do that, sir.

Seriously, I have had several differentials underneath my Stags, even reconditioned ones, and they all had a whine at 50-60. Some worse than others. I just turn the radio up, or press the loud pedal a bit more.

Mine whined like a banshee.. replaced it with a rebuilt longer legged diff and silent as a lamb.. (suspect if the quil bearing is not at fault you should just get the whole diff rebuilt.. false economy to not do it all).
My TR6 (similar diff) also whines at 50-60 so clearly an inherent resonance in the Triumph diff design that is exacerbated by wear..

The file you gave me is my next port of call. I shall read the info tonight. I am pretty sure that the diff I have is off a Triumph 2000 estate and will be checking the letters this weekend. If it is then I shall look for another diff and get it rebuilt before putting it in the car.

Probably worth getting the quil shaft housing strengthened while you are at it. Don't want it snapping.

Does anyone know what a diff weights? I would need to get one posted to me . The sizes would also help.

I’ve got mine out at the mo, no scales to help but I would estimate 30-40kg. Do you want me to measure it?
