If you need to remove the black tape around the wiring loom to make repairs, consider using a seam stripper.

Have been warned off repairing 50 year old looms.
So much risk of extra damage when they’ve got cooked & hard.
Has to be done really carefully if undertaken.
Proper crimp tools essential… often adds up to quite a lot if you are only doing one repair.
