Car manufacture date and registration date discrepancy

    Hello All
In the process of buying a Stag. V5 states car manufacturers in 1974, but registration date 1/8/1978. Any ideas why there would be such a difference between the 2 dates / reasons?
    Thanks David

Possibly built in 1974 then exported. Registered in 1978 when re-imported. This used to happen, but nowadays I believe a re-imported vehicle will show its correct build date. I looked at a carmine auto Stag back in 2008 which, like the one you are looking at, was built in 74, exported to Hong Kong (or possibly Singapore), then registered back in the UK on a T-plate in 78.

Peter Robinson might be able to help if you have a registration number/ body number etc.

        Hi David,
You could also see if the British Motor Museum have it on record and obtain a Heritage Certificate, but it will cost you £48.
Might be better than purchasing a "ringer".
A Heritage Certificate is a certified copy of your car's entry in the original factory ledger, showing the specification as it left the production line.

Thanks for the info. The car has been family owned for the last 35 years. It was taken over to the States for a while during their ownership and then bought back to UK. Paperwork to prove. It’s on a private plate (that happens to be N reg). So if it goes back onto a new plate, would it be N reg or T reg?

Depending when in 1974; it could be either M or N. As V5 states 1978, it would possibly get a S or T plate.

I have a 1972 Range Rover that is first registered as 1992 because the owner at that time changed the engine to diesel. It still retains it's 1972 reg plate. DVLA gibbonry

Chances are that the car in question was repatriate in 1978 and therefore it will be dated as first registered in 1978. Nowadays the DVLA would be inclined to give the car an age related plate based upon evidence of the build date " #Heritagecertificate " which is recognised as being a factory build document.

My dad repatriated a car from Europe and it was reallocated it's original UK number plate that it had prior to being exported.

If the original numberplate has been transferred or sold on by DVLA then that will not be possible, that mostly occurs with pre 1963 stuff though.

              Good luck with the purchase

Mine too - it was exported to Begium in 2006 and registered there as OBM508. When it returned to the UK in 2013 the car was allowed to revert to the original registration number.

The dvla registration date can be when dvla first put the car on computer.
