    Oil cooler bobbins

Quick question guys though I may have answered this myself.

I am replacing my bashed up oil cooler, partly because it was a little bit damp with atf around the connection pipes which I could not tighten more than they already was.

On removal there were only rubber mounting bobbins at one end of the cooler, the other end at the connection pipes were fixed with nuts and bolts.

I often refer to the online Rimmer's catalogue because of the ease of using pictures and parts. On there it says that 4 rubber bobbins are required. I thought this made sense. So I bought 4 with a new cooler..

Can I get this to fit...not a chance and if I forced it then the pipes will not reach the cooler.

So now looking in the rom I can only see two bobbins. So should I fit the cooler with nuts and bolts one end and bobbins at the other end ?
If I use bobbins at both ends I will need to replace the pipes as they will not reach otherwise.

I am a little hesitant and thought best to ask here because I understand that not using bobbins can cause the cooler to fracture.
    TIA Alan

Only two fitted one end. Same part number for the petrol pump mount, so might not go to waste.

if not mistaken, you need two on the left side. Right side is bolted straight up. The PO on mine, bent the brackets on the left side and bolted it.

The same three are used for the fuel pump. As an experiment, I glued a broken one with left over Tiger Seal. it is quite solid and flexes. I'll save it for the pump.

If you are messing with those bobbins, It's a good time to replace the anti roll bar bushes, that is if you haven't changed them already.

I imagined the bobbins were needed at both ends so fitted extra at the pipe end…. Didn’t last a month…. Bolt back up hard.

The antiroll bar bushes appear to have been changed not too long ago by the looks of it. But thanks for the tip.
Though I will be stripping it and the front suspension all off for next winters project.

It does look like bobbin mounts ought to be at both ends but hey ho it is more straight forward to refit the same as I removed it. Good to know that is the right way as I did think that it might of been a po bodge 🙄.

I reckon that it is rigidly fixed at the end where the (rigid) metal pipes are attached to it, and flexibly at the other end to allow for expansion and contraction caused by the changing temperature of the transmission fluid.

That makes good sense to me Mike, thank you. This confused me as well until I looked at several cars to confirm the 'as built' condition.- the parts book drawing matches reality, but Rimmers appear to have made an error when they modified this to show the aftermarket part.

When mine was fitted with a BW35 auto the mashed up cooler had no bobbins at all and was bolted tight. what might be the purpose for the bobbins?

See my suggestion. Something would have to bend if they weren't fitted.

Mine didn't have the bobbins when I bought it, and the cooler eventually fractured because of it. New one was mounted properly with two bobbins at one end.

I also think the bobbins are there to take up for vibration.

                              Why would it vibrate?
