    Number plate law changes

Hi all, I’m a little confused with the new number plate law changes, I have a 1977 Mk 2 Stag with black and white number plates as I understood vehicles before 1980 were allowed to use Black and white plates if they were registered before 1st January 1980.
I've asked my local mot centre as the new law indicates that that vehicles made after 1st January 1973 must have modern day white at the front and yellow at the rear.

confused , if any one can give me some advice that would be great .

    regards

    Ricky

Hi Ricky I understand that cars built before 1st January 1973 and those cars built before January 1980 that are registered as an historic vehicle are allowed to have white or silver lettering on a black background.
Otherwise they must have the standard black lettering on white front and yellow rear number plates.

yep, just as I said. Silver lettering on black allowed on historic vehicles built prior to January 1980.

That’s interesting. My car was first registered on January 1st 1973 and therefore, if the above document is to be taken literally, could use white on black number plates. I have taken the view that, as the new reflective number plates were the latest, greatest thing my car would have been wearing reflective plates from new. So that is what I’ve chosen for the replacements.

Hi Ricky , this is what your mot test station should have said , regards Lloyd
                  • display white, grey or silver characters on a black background - only on vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1980

My philosophy too. The Stag was a premium car when launched and very few owners would have chosen to have the same style of number plate as the neighbours 10-year-old Moggy Thou.

The way I read it, if the car was registered between 1973 and 1980 it can keep whatever it already has (black and silver or white, yellow and black). But, if for any reason you need to put replacement plates on, then they must be white, yellow and black.

We have a new genre of Stag owners; plate snobs!

I guess if I were to follow the advice often given on car forums and "drive it like you'd stolen it" I wouldn't want a number plate which could be easily recognised and remembered!
                          The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

No, if you read it, 'first fix' number plates must be to the new standard.

I far prefer the black and silver plate on my Topaz Mk1 compared to the yellow and black on my Topaz Mk2 simply because the yellow clashes horribly with the Topaz
