    automatic gearbox oil level

Hi All , I have looked at another stag original engine , automatic , didnt change down or up properly , after chap took me for a drive , checked oil level in gearbox , bone dry, how long should the gearbox dip stick be and if gearbox is shot and i think it is as it wouldnt change properly in D drive and i could smell burning.
how much is a replacement plus fitting or go down jag gearbox with prop shaft ?
    Thanks again

Leyland Service Bulletin 2-77 BW Transmissions Fluid Level checking.pdf

The length of the dip stick will depend on what box you have a BW35 or Bw65, I use to check mine by getting it up to running temp, then on the flat select all gears, then put it in park turn off engine and wait 30seconds and dip the the level, which I recall is info from here.

      now have a ZF box

I also kept this note from a Rover forum , although dip stick etc maybe slightly different?, but tell you what a difference the kick down cable adjustment makes, the stag will have different change speeds.
      Looking after the BW35.pdf

you can also read the ROM on kick down adjustment, which may be of more use , maybe some help, others I'm sure will be along with more/better informed help soon, but I think mine change in top about 25-28 mph, the tighter the cable the later it changed.

Thanks for this , what if the car has been driven for a while with low or no gearbox oil?

With no oil the car wouldn't move, and if it gets low, it will not operate properly. By filling it to the correct level you will be able to check what sort of condition it is in.

I have a bw35. I've been in situations where I drive around a corner and there's no drive. It seems like the car is coasting. Exiting the curve restores power. The fix was to fill up with fluid

BW should have fitted a warning light to advise owners to top up fluid, just like the engine oil pressure light.

                  Not possible…. The BW35 was £35…the BW65 was £65. Nothing left to fit a sender & lamp

i nbught the car today at 4:30 pm got home at 8:30pm ,drove it home , topped up with auto gearbox oil from halford that D11 stuff , drove about 70 miles at 2000rpm , speed was err non reading on speedo , dial kept fluctiating between 50 -80mph, I think i was doing 50mph as everyone else was flying past.
Oli pressure was a steady 40psi ar just over 2000rpm , temp gauge was below half way, car hadnt done more than 1400 miles in 13 years , 203 miles last year then less than 100 miles every other year going back to 2010.
                    lights are shocking

Don’t put DII (Dexron) based oil into a BW35 or 65.
