    dull lights

    hi :dude: have any one had my problem, if i turn my head lights on , my dash lights go out, or so low as i can,t see them. could it be a bad earth , and would it be a good idea to make a new earth to go to the dash?.also had to replace the flasher unit, but it goes slower than it used to . any thoughts: Paul

    Sounds more like you are running out of voltage old chap - is your alternator working properly?

    I had an absolutely identical problem on an old Dolly Sprint - had to uprate the alternator from the standard 33amp unit to a 45amp from a Maestro as the indicators would just stop flashing with the lights on and HRW.

    You could have a general fault in your charging cicuit - doesn't have to be the alternator - could be a rubbish connection in the charging wiresor engine earth.

    Start by testing your battery voltage with a proper voltmeter with the lights on and the engine at 1500rpm- less than 13.6 volts and there's your problem.... then you have to fix it....... let us know and maybe we can advise....

      :dude: hi kryten, i found something else out last night, i had toused the car lastnight for the first time, and did not know till i got home, that my rear lights go out the same time as my dash lights, i went about three miles without any tail lights, whoops!. i was lucky to get home without being stopped. i think it must be the light switch ,what do you think? Paul

        Hi Paul

        On the face of it it sounds quite likely, and hopefully easy to find out - I assume from what you are saying that the side/tail lamps are on until you turn on the headlamps and go back on if you return the switch to the sidelamps again. I did notice that you say tail lamps and dash lamps, but you haven't specifically mentioned front sidelamps - what are these doing when your headlamps are switched on?

        Depending on Commision number the wiring is different - let me have your comm no and I'll try to give you an easytrail to follow - a good test light and/or a multimeter should be enough to get this sorted - hopefully!
