    BW 35 Bearing change.

The output shaft on my BW35 wobbles and so needs a new bearing ..plus. Was going to use Driver Transmissions in Bham (have used them before) but searching came acros Wadhams in Lye. If any one has had dealings with either of these in the past I would be interested to hear.

    Many thanks...Mike

Mike I would ask Scotty (your Regional co-ord) where he sends gearboxes for work, I’m sure he does a few.
Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

I have done. He suggested I have a ZF conversion, which is silly money for what you get.

Not exactly the answer you wanted. The ZF is good but I agree it’s not cheap. There’s a guy on here who is in the auto gearbox business down south I think he is Alacrity he might be able to advise. Otherwise Peter Howells is a good source of information

The zf conversion for other marques is offered at over twice the T&L price.
Before anyone calls it silly money & shows their ignorance… see how much transmission you get elsewhere first.

the bw35 output shaft will move around even with a new bearing…. It’s so far away.
the propshaft spline & oil seal keep it concentric.

              Moderators hat on.

Let’s not forget people are entitled to opinions chaps. We don’t have to agree with them but they are valid nonetheless

’silly money ‘ factually incorrect .

Julian, for some people £4,000 is silly money to spend on a gearbox. It is not a statement of the value for money and is an opinion, either respect it or stop commenting on it please. As i have just fitted one I personally think they are excellent but others have differing views

                  thank you

some people wouldn't spend £4k on a complete car for daily driving lol

Mrs Thestag spent 3k and all 3 of my sons managed to get running and reliable cars for less than £1k each.

anyway, yonks ago, the bw35 in my stag started to misbehave.. well, to be accurate, the pump started to get noisy.

a bw35 and tc refurb at the time was £1500, which I thought expensive lol. the zf was like the cost of a lunar expedition by comparison, so it was instantly discounted.

a chat with a breaker for another used old stock bw35 resulted in me getting a complete manual o/d conversion that had been rebuilt for £800.

having said all of that, bw35 suits the stag perfectly for me. I wish mine was still fitted with the old 3 speed Baderbox.

nowt wrong with the zf but I just couldn't justify the cost. that in my book equals the definition of "silly money"

back to op, change seal and refit the propshaft nose piece. if any play goes away then I would have thought that it is just fine.

Same conversion kit for a mk2 jag is £9000ish

                      That’ll buy lots more popcorn.

                      or a 6 speed for over £10000

Transform the way your automatic classic Jaguar drives. Replace the aged 3-speed with a modern electronic 6-speed auto in all V12 and 6 cylinder XK engine cars.

I'm under the impression from our BW35 expert that it's a bush and not bearing and it's difficult to source.

Doing a zf conversion without a kit is a mission.
There are reports here that having tried & been successful the skilled owners wouldn’t attempt another. It’s a bigger job than it may appear.
Appreciate it may be a walk in the park for a few, but not many.

There was a chap who banged on & tried offering an alternative cheaper kit…. He made 2.
Neither had comparable completeness to the T&L offering.
It wasn’t much cheaper at all.

Try £10 k for a Jaguar transmission conversion; or £ 5k for a Range Rover door mirror.

Makes the T&L seem good value.

“Silly money” can also mean unbelievably good value after all.
