    Exhaust Rattle

    Hi all,
    I have a 77 Mk2 which has developed a rattle in the centre silencer. It is stainless and was already fitted to the car when I bought it. My friendly local mechanic had a look and is pretty sure it’s a baffle come a drift. As the exhaust is generally in very good condition he suggested that it might be possible to have it repaired by someone able to weld S/S? I've contacted a couple of local exhaust centres who advertise custom made stainless exhausts but they turn out to be tyre fitters who just want to sell new systems. So to a couple of questions really, firstly is it possible/advisable to try and get it repaired and if so does anyone know of anybody in the Midlands/Telford/Wolverhampton area that would take this on.
    Thanks in advance.

    I don’t know for sure that they’ll help, but I have had a stainless silencer repaired by A44 Exhausts in Worcester. Not the same, it was a weld on the outside that had fractured and they re-welded it - in situ!

    They also make bespoke exhausts in stainless ;

    May be worth a call first…….

      New silencers are about £100. I reckon that by the time someone has cut into your silencer and repaired it you’ll probably get a bill for about the same amount and if it isn’t repairable you will still have to buy a new one.

      I hate the “replace don’t repair” culture that is now part of our everyday life but some things are just not worth repairing.

        Modern stainless systems don't seem to have the quality of the system fitted to my stag 30 years ago.

        I guess the manufacturers were painting themselves into a corner as far as repeat business was concerned.

        I "may" have fixed a rattling baffle in the past (on my old Triumph 1500TC) by giving the exhaust casing a half decent whack with a trusty 3lb hammer. Dented the case but stopped the pesky rattle

            The full SS system was fitted to my stag in 1993, I bought the car shortly after. Never had any issues with it at all.

            Range Rover was fitted with a complete system just under 8 years ago. silencers are still shiny but the rest is heavily pitted with rust. Probably not an entirely fair comparison. Since fitting the Stag has done nearly 32k miles while the range rover has done 180k and in all weathers.

            I used to rot through the generic Range Rover v8 s**tpart mild steel systems in 18 months. I guess by now I would be on my 6th mild steel system, so the SS system has broken even

              I got some of mr harts silencers & got the 316 grade downpipes from dare I say rimmers… the only off the shelf 316 items I could find. These replaced a 30 year old stainless system which of course had a fake lifetime guarantee

              imho a single weld or two to secure a loose baffle might be cheaper than replacing.

              I would offer a couple of in situ welds or silver solders for less than a pair of silencers.

                Thanks for all the comments guys. Having weighed everything up, I’ll probably go for replacing the silencer.
