    Mk1 Mohair Hood

May I ask where you should go for a new Mk1 Black Mohair Hood

    #2
    Aldridge trimming Wolverhampton.
Otherwise south east trimming which is a bit far away if you’re after fitting too.

Well Ive had a VERY BAD experience with him.
He was supose to service and overhaul my frame and a new soft top fitted.
It came back with the frame just black rattle can painted. Parts of the frame missing.
Stich lines in the wrong place so the rear hopes were in the rong position and therefore hood wouldnt fit.
Stiching coming loose even when not fitted.
Front rail not padded and the metal front trim not correctly riveted on and missing rivets and therefore the rubber wouldnt fit it.

I bought and fitted a Mk1 hood earlier in the year, wanting to retain some semblance of originality over the normal Mk2 hoods seen on virtually all Stags these days. (same issue with alloys)
I'm now torn over if it was the right decision.
I fitted it myself and the side windows look awful, not smooth at all.
Going to try some adjustments over the winter but wonder if having mohair in those areas rather than plastic would have been a better option and easier to deal with.

I fitted an Aldridge hood to my MK1 when I restored it 6 or 7 years ago and have never had any problems with the rear windows. They are a bit of a pain when lowering the hood as it takes extra care to ensure there are no creases in the side windows, but now I have started to restore my Mk2, it will be having a MK1 hood as they are just so much nicer to drive, and to look at

              Thanks Neil.
I've planned how to make the minor tweaks required but its good to know that us non-professionals can get there in the end.

Do you mean the whole assembly including frame and fittings or just the cover?

My advice is that if the frame has never been properly restored before is to have it done before fitting a new cover.

Also Mk1 hoods had corner windows which sharply fold when lowering the hood into the well, and these can sometimes crease and crack. Possibly why they changed the design to Mk2.

I and a friend have had various experiences with SE Trimming and there were various faults with the frames and fittings (unstable front corner of the frame not repaired and covered with filler, missing rivets etc.).

Why does this post not surprise me? As a moderator I find it slightly unsavoury that a guy who sells and maintains soft tops and frames is denigrating another supplier of frames and soft tops and that is definitely against the spirit of the guidance we have in the forum rules. Please delete the post Chris.

Plus the hood he fitted to my stag in 1999, yep over 23 years ago, is still going strong and not leaking

Why keep digging up the past Richard and trying to start arguments with me. Also it seem your are slagging off Carl which achieves nothing now. Throw that old Moderator hat away and get over it! Its doesn't add any value to this forum so I suggest you just keep to the topic.

It seems that SET does some good work sometimes, but clearly there are those like me who haven't had that experience.
