    Cam covers - best way to clean up and re-secure the internal filter?

    Hi all,
    I'd like to repaint my cam covers prior to refit. They've been previously painted and the internal filter/plate has been tig "welded" back into place (not a pretty sight)!! I really want to remove said plate to allow me to blast the covers, but if I do what's your thoughts and best recommendations for re-attaching the plate and filter material? Were they originally spot welded into place? If so, that's not an option as i don't have any access to that equipment.
    Any advice appreciated.

    modify them how Edd did first , them you can repaint/coat them how you like and clean the flame trap filter in the future, when I go on my lap top I will find the the thread and photos, easy enough to do with a small amount of skill and patience.

        I'd no idea this info existed, many thanks for posting it. Looks like a great idea - that actually works.
        Did you just put a slight set in a piece of flat plate to create the side guides or something you've both "doctored" from an off the shelf part?

          This is a std cover (below photos), I used the plate that covers the flame trap and made the bent side runners out of scrap plate the same thickness or slightly thinner , to get the cover out just gently prise away from the side wall of the cover to break the small spot welds, the edge that is by the red arrow was straightened and shortened as the photos this stops it moving back at it rests againist the cam bearing carrier. ( I doubt that it will move away) I think if you have a joggle tool you can make the side sides easier, but I didn't have one. make sure you keep the gap at the other end for the gases to get though, just make sure it moves before you fully weld, I have lever mine slightly away from the end to get it out but that's fine.

                Main news is :- ask before blasting, refinishing & ruining your engine build…..Ouch…. It’s painful, spendy & painful.
                Great that Gord asked first…someone here had 2 rebuilds to do afterwards… double pain.
