    Starting / Flooding

My stag is so fantastic and reliableat starting when cold - i was told by the previous owner to pull the choke full out whilst depressing accelerator pedal, and it seems to work fine. The problem I seem to be having now is starting after it's cooled down a bit. Yesterday I think I flooded it and it was a real pig to get going again.

Can anyone provide tips on different tchniques to use depending on conditions, e.g. starting when it's been been driven say for5 miles /15 minsand then left for an 30 mins. I would normally just leave the choke in, turn the key and wait for it to catch before depressing the accelerator a bit.

    Cheers,

    Dave

Hot starting difficulty is usually caused by an over rich mixture. If you have the original Stromberg carbs, they seem to be prone to this for various reasons. We have had three incidents this last week where owners have found a pool of fuel in the manifold after removing the carbs.

Have you checked the colour of a couple of adjacent spark plugs? They should be light brown not black.

I'm still getting the 'hot' flooding problem even after changing both needle valves. Is there anything else that can be done?

Flooding can also be caused by the vent valves being closed. Check these are correcly adjusted and working.

Vent valves? Where are they in that big mass on top of the engine? :?

In the Stromberg carbs. They can stick or be wrongly adjusted.

I think Chris is referring to these. I had a similar problem in that my Stag was a real pig to start when it was hot. I stripped and rebuilt my carbs so I can't be sure that is what the problem was but I think it was this fella!

Ahhh picture paints... Are they straight forward to replace or is it a strip down job?

                    Thanks

I just gave mine a good hosing out with WD40. I don't think that they are replacable by the DIYer (Certainly not me anyway!). It has been working fine ever since.
