Set the teeth of the sprocket you need to drill out of alignment with the one you are using as a guide by the required amount.

If you need 1/3 of a tooth different then rotate the one that needs drilling 1/3 of a tooth in the direction required then clamp the two together in the vice and use a dot punch to mark the spot where you need to drill the holes.
Take great care and think about the way the sprocket is going to be bolted to the cam as it is very easy to end up going the wrong way, then you have to weld up the holes and start again. No prizes for guessing how I found this out

Flying, I understand the process of advancing or retarding the cams...what I,m trying to fathom out is redrilling a sprocket out of phase ...unlike vernier sprockets you move the cam....with the piston at TDC. how do you get the redrilled sprocket to line up with the links in the chain...as the chain has the correct number of links on the tension side & will not compensate for 1/3 rd. of a tooth being out.

No different to a vernier sprocket, the chain goes on the sprocket then the cam is advanced/retarded until it lines up with the redrilled holes in the sprocket.

Most of the time the cam timing is retarded due to head and block skimming, though I have had the odd one where one cam was exactly where I wanted it without touching the sprocket.

It is always necessary to do a dummy build to estimate how much the timing needs to be moved, then add a bit extra advance to allow for compression of the head gasket. Back in the days of Payen head gaskets I didn't need to allow much for gasket compression. The BGA gaskets go down quite a lot. It is important to check the timing chains are not too tight when a new head gasket is fitted.

Have you any previous notes on engine timing...having the heads skimmed so BOTH are exactly the same height...with the cams reground by Kent I have No referance as to what the correct valve timing should be for a slightly higher compression engine...ie piston at x ammount degree,s
& inlet valve open x ammount.

            Info from Kent Cams
            inlet opens 32 degrees BTDC
            Inlet closes 73 degrees ABDC
            Lobe centreline 109 degrees
            checking height 0.25mm
            Lift @TDC 1.797mm

I reality after much measuring I found the original timing mark on the cams to be in exactly the right place, its just that the timing retards as everything settles in. If yours has already run for a while the chains and guides will have bedded in so I would allow about 1/4 of a tooth advance to compensate for head gasket compression and future wear

Flying, Yes even thought I had the problem I still managed 50 miles...will check piston protrusion etc. as I had to have the block skimmed...having valve seat cutters made at the mo...will post you some photo,s when finished...I was building a set of manifolds to take 4 Webber 40 IDA,s when I realised that my left 1 was colliding with the dizzy...so later I,ll make a set-up to run cop,s.
