Sooty when starting is normal maybe use less choke when starting in summer.
Soot inside air filter, strange, is engine running backwards, how many reverse gears do you have? More likely oil deposits, as I previously said alternative fuelling cannot handle engine breathing as the Strombergs do.
Sooty plugs indicated rich running, presumably the idle mixture is set ok, nothing else to do as they’re set up “to run straight from the box” as we’re told
Have you got the Strombergs? Wouldn’t take long to swap them back as a comparison..

Any carb or fuelling system fitted to a engine will need at least some adjustment to "match" the particular engine - even Strombergs
( I assume EFI will either have to "autotune" itself or need some initial setting ). I am sure the Weber comes with instructions on setting the idle speed and mixture.
I would suggest checking the carb is adjusted as per the suppliers instructions - after checking the ignition system - timing, plug gaps etc. are correct. If you don't have the instructions then contact Stagweber and I am sure they will email them to you -it should only be a case of twiddling a couple of screws no special equipment or particular expertise required. Now Stagless but have numerous car projects
So many cars, so little time!

Hi , i meant inside the pan cake filler has smokey deposts, not sooty.
Since changing all saprk plugs and leads , starts 1st time and sounds as should.
still sooty smoke on starting , which then disappears , car has been hardly used in last 20 years.
Took car out today , drove fine , gearbox changing smoothly now , but I do get a clunk on reverse?
Great feed back as usual guys

Thats correct for Luke at stagweber. Try a Mann C2536 or equivalent for the filter. A few on eBay.Originally posted by Symmo View Postaccording to the advert in this months club magazine the telephone number for Luke at Stagwebber is 07723 023271. As for the filter take it to a decent motor factors and they should be able to identify and supply the correct replacementChris
