    Ignition Switch Dramas

    My ignition stuck on this morning. Had to disconnect coil then battery to switch engine off.
    Removed switch then top wiring bracket for it to explode upon removal!
    Am I in big trouble? IMG_5235.jpg I’m

    MK.2 switches are available from the usual suppliers.

      have rebuilt a few…. only ever do it if there is a spare to hand …. And a clean area….. lost too many springs & balls before.

            Is it just a case of unplugging the old switch and plugging in the new one? I presume you just cut the old switch off the wires and seal the exposed wires off with tape?

                I’m talking about a new switch being fitted as I’ve purchased a new lock and ignition switch etc IMG_5237.jpg

                    PITA to have to dismantle part of the steering column assembly to remove/refit the wiring harness. That's probably why some people bodge it by cutting the wires.

                      IMG_5235.jpg The old switch as attached that I won’t be using. Just to tidy it all up so no loose ends literally.
                      I presume I just cable tie the new cable to the old loom?
                      Is the connector inside the car around the pedal box area.
                      I didn’t get chance to look today as I didn’t realise you could buy the kit complete

                          Do the job properly. Remove the lower steering column cowl (two screws and a bolt at the base of the column). Remove the old loom down to the connector and replace with the new one. If you do not want to do it that way, then desolder the old loom from the old switch and the new loom from the new switch and solder the new switch to the old loom.

                          When I changed mine I bought a bare switch (no wires) as many of the replacements have wires that are too short.

                            No power where car is so I’ll use the first method. Did not realise it’s a simple if fiddly fix, thanks

                              I still use a 12v soldering iron I bought 50 years ago when I had my first car. They are available online for not much money.
