    my rev counter

Do you have electronic ignition fitted?

If you have, then you need to get the rev counter rewired to cope properly with modern electronics. You currently have 4 wires in the back. This will be reduced to 3. Two of the wires are part of the ignition circuit (I can't remember from memory which ones, but light green rings a bell), and as you mention, when you disconnect them, the engine cuts. You can wire these together to complete the circuit and bypass the rev counter; this is basically what 'speedy cables' (see below) will tell you to do. Their remaining wires will run to + and - on the coil and to earth.

Try 'speedy cables'. They sorted mine out for about £50. It had exactly the same symptoms as yours, as did the replacement, until fixed. They also supply wiring instructions for refitting.

If you don't have electronic ignition, using a wiring diagram, you'll need to trace and check wiring connections, earths, etc.
hi just been looking at this.my mk1 tv8's rev counter doesn't work it has luminition and the p/o said it worked fine at first after fitting it but stopped working some time later.what i'd like to know is my tacho now u/s or can it be repaired if so can it be done by an idiot(me) or is it a specialist job.by the way i have heard mk 2 internals can be used in my mk1 case what is involved here??

    cheers steve.

I see a lot of problems on this forum with mk1 and mk11 rev counters
        i will attempt to clarify

mk 1 rev counters are smiths rvi type 2 rev counters and as such are induction sense via internal loop and transformer
if they work on any type of electronic ignition ,then you are lucky!
electronic ignition can put some large voltage spikes through the rev counter so causing it to bounce, misread or fail

mk2 rev counters are smiths rvc style, and are fine for electronic ignition

both rev counters have old internal electrics and can easily fail
the rvi usually fails because of the capicitor no 1,transitor
        or thermister
mk 2 rev counters fail because of the solitary chip goes deaf ,and are not available any more
for those wishing to fit mk2 internals to mk 1 rev counters, you have a problem
        1 , the internals are different requiring a diffent case ( mk11)
2, the mk 1 rev counter face will not fit on mk 11 internals as the screw holes are in the wrong place, horizontal as opposed to vertical and different spacing
NO YOU CANT TURN THE FACE 180 DEGREES IT WILL NOT WORK

        solution for mk 1 owners

i can replace the internals with modern unit that uses the same case and the screw holes are the same oriontation
        (change of wiring required)
join together male and female bullet connectors from loom so keeping positive feed to coil
run extra wire to negative side of coil

        solution for mk 11 owners

replace internals with modern unit( no change of wiring)
        hope that helps

if you have any problems or issues with you rev counter it is easier to phone or email

as i do not get a lot of time to answer quires on this forum
and my typing speed is too slow
