    Ignition left on over night

    Hi all
Doing some electrical tests the other evening, got side tracked and left ignition on over night, came to it the following morning and tried to turn over which it did a bit but not enough left in battery to start.
Left on charge for a day, while thinking of things that may of occurred while left on, I decided to check oil to see if any had passed due to pump being energised, it had so need to change oil filter, anything else I need to check.

    Thanks in advance

Somebody else will come along I'm sure and confirm my thoughts, but doesn't the coil get cooked with ignition left on with cars of our early electrical / ignition systems ?

Not sure but it wasn’t warm, I did have a feel of it

It depends which electronic ignition you have. For example, Accuspark types cut off the current when the engine stops. Lumenition does not cut off.

Re you saying oil pump energised is it not standard mechanical so unless engine running should not move oil. The only pump that would be energised would be the fuel pump.

I checked the oil level due to fuel pump being energised, was some fuel contamination so will drop oil and changed filter. Do have Lumenition, and strangely reading on EJ wards web page they recommend fitting a ballasted coil, mine seems to have original, Remy De something not clear, been running ok for years so not sure if its correct or not so might invest in new one

Ballast coils are the correct original fitment, but some have converted to a non-ballasted ignition system.

unlikely that fuel will have contaminated the oil unless you have an alternative carb option that floods into the inlet manifold so I think you should be ok there.

Bulbs and ignition coil will be the only issues if any.

Charge it up and give it a go I reckon.

Ballast coils are fitted to ballast resistors or Eureka wires on Mk2 stags. Ballasted coil will quickly overheat when run on 12v and non ballast coil running on a ballasted supply will give a weak spark

Have found viper coils to be a viable replacement.
Did have a duff one though that was replaced by the supplier.

Once bosche red tops were recommended… had one that only lasted a couple of years though.

I imagine the OP coil make was Delco-Remy… probably no longer available.

                  OEM was Lucas.

some modern Lucas branded stuff is poor…. But not all of it.

There are credible efforts to get Lucas stuff remade to decent quality right here in the U.K.

All credit to those trying to get more High Quality Lucas stuff remade…

An inaugural Lucas Classic event is happening this Saturday in fact, hosted by SNG Barrett , former stag specialist suppliers.

It was wonderful to see nearly 2000 people enjoying the spectacle of over 150 different British classics running up the famous Hillclimb on such a beautiful day
