    hood catch

On 1 side of the hood the catch was not holding so roof been stuck a few times . I have adjusted it .it does catch bit let's go again .so whats the advice on shall I get new catch .Nice and cheap but would this work ?
Or fork £50 for stagwebber catches. Which seem very expensive. And can only be bought in pairs
    Cheers .
I suppose I'm hoping a new normal catch will do the job .at £15

Sounds like something is a little bent, double check the rear hoop and arms, saying that i think the new roof catch that stagwebber sells are better than originals

The stagweber catches are £45.00 a pair on their website. Made in England (not India or China), in stainless steel. and will not fail to hold. Seems a fair deal to me.

The stag Webber catches are good value.

( if you think they are overpriced…. Make some yourself for less )

They are not really suited to a mk1 hood imho.

I bought a set of Stagweber catches a few years ago, and although they functioned well, they were poorly finished, which took a lot of fettling to remove all of the sharp edges. Sharp edges in close proximity to hood fabric or operator’s fingers is not desirable. This could easily have been resolved during manufacture in a rumbling machine.

                  Agree.

o.p. Thought they were already very expensive though.
                  Guess it’s a tricky balance.

If they were rounded & polished that might add another £50….

                  Just saying…

mgb & midget parts prices seem attractive, oops sorry

Yes, and that was soon resolved, and since then the manufacturer was asked to remove the sharp edges.

Ah; I must have been lucky enough to have bought one of the ‘owner self-development non-recall’ versions!

just to strike a balance, I purchased a set last year, have fitted, and have now no problems with catches coming undone.

I managed to get them to work on a mk1 hood frame & cover.
I was a big fiddle though.
Created extra risk with potential to damage the mk1 hood cover. (Which folds differently to mk2)

much easier than starting from scratch to make your own though & improved over original ones. Thanks wheelz.

commensurate with original triumph stuff…. Room for more improvement….. as they always say in my annual reviews …. Probably cost related in both senses

Have helped on a few hood situations now…. Biggest issue by far is owners loosing their ‘rag’ with them & causing damage.
                            2nd biggest is incorrect adjustments.
3rd is a random trimmer having fitted a new cover in the wrong placement.

Merc sl hoods from the Same era are similar & just a bit more robust & accurate fwiw.

Fast forward just 2 decades to the mid 1990s (developed in the late 80’s) & the merc (webasto?) vario roof on an SLK (1995) is super, but far, far more complex to repair….. hydraulic pump, rams, microswitches, sequence controller etc etc. not to mention 150+mph sealing…..

which is so so expensive to get right in production & also to reproduce/ repair correctly….

All bespoke moldings made at vast cost compared to other hood seals ‘cut off a roll’ cheapness…..

As Richard Noble m12? found out with his super car door seal moldings at £1m + a side….. for a 200 mph car…. You cannot use simple extrusions for those applications (apparently failing to know that was the straw that put them out of business)

Clarksons ‘how hard can it be?’ Sums it up really….. It’s not rocket science is it? Well, Nope, totally agree….it’s much harder than that!

afaiaa, we can’t even get bi-hardness extrusions now for our hood ‘seals’… even though they struggle to seal at all.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Another vote for the stagweber catches. The frame on mine isn't properly aligned but the catches still hold.
