I had a Dolly Sprint back in the late '70's and had the same problem after installing a new pump. Blew 2 guages, wasn't impressed.
Turned out it was all my own fault. I took the top off the pump to look at the internal workings and reassembled with the top 180 degrees out which meant there was effectively no pressure by pass. I also did the same with my RV8 this winter after a crank regrined, placed the relief valve plug back 180 degrees out and blew a guage. It looked logical when I did it, but lack of attention when I removed it made installing it a 50/50 chance.
Looking at the pump in Rimmers catalogue the Stag pump resembles the Sprint pump so that may be the problem.
