    Steering Rack piston shim

Hi all have stripped the rack down and whilst inspecting saw that there was a single shim on one side of the piston. Problem is I did not notice it when removing the piston so can’t remember which side it would have been on as the piston can go either way. Any ideas ?

I have stripped 4 racks now and never seen a shim.. can’t really see why you would need one, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt and surely either side would be OK?

I have some tips on resealing the rack if you are interested…

May be the Cir clips were thinner than the original spec so a shim was added??

Glad the website is some help, I just updated that, my rack kept leaking after a few months, not from the control, but I think I have cracked it now..

OK so to move to the control valve. When I undid the three nuts and removed the control valve there is just a steel spacer ring that I can pull out easily enough, no seals as such the seal is above the bearing on the pinion shaft. I think this means its a later rack, in which case oil should not get down past the seal on the shaft so the bearing needs greasing otherwise no seal just the spacer then bolt back on again ?

Yes, the later Alford and Adler only has a spacer ring. Are you going to reseal the control?

Hi Trunt I have fitted a new black seal ring above the bearing. I have not replaced the 4 white ptfe seals though as the ROM info suggested not to touch them ??

I do have 4 new ones in the seal pack though..

Ok, yes unless the ptfe rings are showing damage most do leave them. But check the surface of the shaft at that top seal and again inside the control body check the surface where that bottom rubber seal runs, it can get rough as well, probably worth changing that bottom seal as well.
