Front Hub, Shims / Rimmer confusion...

Hi All just thought I would share this in case anyone else benefits.

I ordered some shims for the front vertical link to strut. ROM says these are used on either side of the spacer to fine tune camber on the top front lug only.

On Rimmers website they list the shims also they list the bolts used in the bottom two holes of the strut (these are 3/8" bolts) unfortunately in the info for these 2 x 3/8" bolts they quote the info in the ROM about using the shims and spacer. However this is incorrect as these are the two lower bolts and do not need the spacer or shims.

So the shims that Rimmer supply are 3/8" hole size shims so will not fit on the upper bolt as this is a 7/16" bolt.

To be fair to Rimmers the pics in the ROM are not overly clear either !

I assumed that shimming the top or bottom bolts would depend on which way you need to move the camber?

I had some Arbour shims in both sizes, can’t remember which bolts I shimmed, but I got there!

they only fit the bottom bolts too small for the top ones. Mine were only fitted to the front bolt. I need to fiddle with my camber but not sure whether to add or take away

Hi Nick. Thats my point they should not be fitted to the bottom bolts at all, the only place the ROM states shims should be used is the top front bolt (with the spacer) this is my point, Rimmers have it wrong.

I think the ROM is incorrect don't know anyone who has found them fitted to the top bolt

just trawled through about 4 ROM's in two languages and they all say "only shim the top, front bolt"

I have adjusted the camber on 3 cars, including my own.
On all 3 they had too much positive camber, shims were added to the lower bolts to correct.
I have never seen any shims on the top bolt.

This was my thinking, shim the bottom to go more negative, the top to go more positive.. the only way to go negative on top bolts it to remove shims..if you have any!

Plus, why only one bolt? Wouldn’t both bottom bolts with same value shims make more sense?

I’ve adjusted many cars, mostly big saloons but they are the same. I’ve never seen shims on the top bolts, only ever on the bottom. Sometimes one bolts, sometimes both.
