Hi,i will be replacing all of my headlamps soon but there seems to be quite a choice,i would prefer glass lenses and halogens rather than led's..maybe even a set of bowls aswell.any recommendations??
thanks,
I bought a set of four Cibie headlights from Tony Hart nearly 30 years ago, and have been very pleased with them, along with Night Breaker halogen bulbs. I believe Christ Witor sells them, although they may be listed as their parent company Hella.
I bought these a few years back. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253384239913 . Have them both on my Stag and on my Sprint. Made by Autopal, they are at the "budget" end but in my opinion work just fine - far brighter than the headlamps on my Passat daily driver. £50 including H4 and H1 lamps delivered. I might add that I have properly sorted the wiring and earthing so the lamps have a good feed (added relays). On dipped wired for two outers and all four four main beam. To be honest unless you are going rallying or maybe the Round Britain Reliability Run, they will do. Only caveat is the position of the lugs is "variable" so some fettling may be required to fit the original bowls. They have been on the Stag for 6 or 7 years and on the Sprint for 2 years.
Otherwise you will have to go "upmarket" and pay £30 to £50 per lamp for a "Hella" or similar.
Now Stagless but have numerous car projects
So many cars, so little time!
When I replaced all my headlights a while back, I recall using Rimmers as the source - perfectly adequate, although i doubt they would pe[rform quite as splendidly as genuine Cibié units, but there again I do few miles in the dark!
When EJ Ward refurbished my overdrive and diff (about seven years ago now) they also fitted their 4 headlamp upgrade. I can recommend it with one proviso; make sure that the dipped beam setting remains well dipped because some people see four headlamps and flash you thinking you're on main beam. When you can and do use main beam it is fantastic, slightly better even than my BMW and that's pretty good!
Whilst on the subject of lights, as well as seeing there's also being seen, especially rear lamps and brake lights. Worth upgrading to LED if you haven't done so.
Absolutely agree about being seen, but my current pet hate after Climetards is being blinded both by oncoming traffic and also by brake lights from in front.
There should be a happy medium between being hidden and the "**** you lot" attitude of 21c motor manufacturers
Must admit that I never have had issues with standard stag headlights. the only upgrade that I offer on Range Rover work I do is to fit the headlight units that include a sidelight bulb. This does then allow 2 dim OE sidelights and 2 H4 units lit with a sidelight bulb. The only reason for this is that in an age of supernova daylight driving lights you need to be visible. hence my absolute agreement with Paul
stag 5 3/4" light units are available with this sidelight bulb upgrade
