Does anyone know what the hollow rattle sound is when you lift off the throttle?
Not sure I've heard it before?
    Engine rebuilt 3000 miles ago.

Don’t know, when I lift the throttle I’m immediately hard on the brakes …..

Sounds a bit like the valve clearances need re-checking, a bit clattery.

I've sometimes found they can need re-doing when it's all bedded in. Certainly worth checking them anyway.

I wouldn't know what a duff viscous fan coupling sounded like, that was the first thing I got rid of,
must be nearly 18 years ago now.

Check the viscous coupling by grabbing a blade (engine stopped!) and seeing if there is any discernible bearing play. If you spin the blades they should stop quickly. If it spins freely and/or there is ant bearing play, the VC needs to be replaced.

I had a new VC fail on mine in 2008; I could feel a small vibration when the engine was revved and there was visible signs of fluid leaking from the bearing. Replaced it with a genuine Land Rover part and it has been good since.

ERC2849, but finding a genuine LR one might prove difficult as there are so many aftermarket ones around now. I bought mine from here: https://www.thexmod.com/item_detail.asp?id=1617 but whether they still have OE ones anymore I do not know. Rimmers have them, but they want over £320 +VAT

Mine cost less than £40 at the time. Wish I had bought 10!

                        Dave.
Rimmers are advertising them in stock (TKC101) at £103. inc. VAT. Where does your £384 come from, or have I misunderstood something? I think L/R ones may still be available. I got one not so long ago.

                            Mike,

If you do an online search on TKC101 and ERC2849 a variety of suppliers and prices comes up. Back in 2008 I replaced the VC on my car with a TKC101 from one of the Triumph suppliers. It failed within the guarantee period and they supplied another one. That too failed within a few months and another was arranged by them from another respected supplier. In the meantime I had sourced the genuine, sealed, LR item from the government surplus outlet linked above. That one is still working as it should over 50,000 miles later. The third replacement TKC101 is still wrapped in my spares stash.

Whether the current TKC101 units generally available are, or are not, reliable I cannot say. Likewise, the cheaper ER 2849 units available from the LR suppliers.

When I was searching for a replacment visous coupling, (TKC 101 ) I came across a few numbers and cross references .
                              This is what I found:
Viscous coupling: Range Rover. Part No. ERC2849
Viscous coupling: BMW. Part No. 11521260459 (I got number from URO Parts and seems to cross reference a TR7 and Stag.)
                              Viscous coupling: Jag's XJ6 Part no. C45015

I have bought a new one for a Jag, from SNG Barratt here in USA. They sell two types, an aftermarket and a OEM one, I bought the OEM one and it looks like my Stags one.
