    Dipstick markings

Can anyone tell me the amount of oil between the dipstick markings. Also what oil consumption should I expect in a sound engine? Many thanks (1977 Mk2)

I measured it at one pint.

My own car does 500miles per pint, a consumption I think acceptable for an engine of its age and mileage. Amy better than that and you are doing well!

Agree with 1 pint between markings.
Mine does approx 1000 to the pint, rebuilt 25-30 thou ago. With my last long trip of 1100 miles, starting just over full to just under at end.

Sounds like a lot Wilf, that’s basically 10% of your engine oil being burned in 500 miles. Are you sure your engine is ok?

Before I stripped my engine last year it was doing around 1000 mpp. Since giving the bores a glaze-busting hone and rebuilding with new rings it has used about 1/2 pint in 6,000 miles. The inside rims of the tail pipes have remained clean, whereas before they were sooty.

It is what it does, and at over 100k miles and running well I consider it not broke, so I propose not to fix it, and to allow its oil thirst. There are modern engines that consume the same or more, especially if they are "babied" from new.

Mine used to use 1 pint/500miles for some years when it was shagged and breathing heavily. . Since a rebuild by the expert Russ, I never need to add oil between changes.

Well, mine is neither shagged nor breathing heavily, so something to be thankful for. She just likes a drop of oil, lol.

My recent 1971 mile round trip to France towing a trailer tent saw the engine use about 1/2 litre of oil.

Thats about half the amount it used last time as I had replaced the leaking oil cooler take off plate

                        The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

How much is burnt and how much is lost through leaks? I thought Stags were notorious for oil leaks and just considered it a built-in rust prevention feature. LOL

I have a 160K mile Stag that is still on its original pistons with no rebore - just new rings at 80K. The oil consumption did start rising at about 140K miles going up to about 1 litre per 1K miles or more at the end. This turned out to be all down to oil blowing out of the breather, perhaps due to gas leakage past the pistons. The cure was to put a plate over the camshaft to stop oil being flicked up behind the breather plate. The car now requires no top ups between changes (3K miles). My plugs don't foul anymore and the car gives good economy. It has transformed the car. I can't believe mine is the only Stag with this issue. Put a catch can on the breather and see what you get.
