    Windscreen chrome

The last piece of my overhaul is the bright chrome-work that goes round the windscreen. I have a new windscreen fitted with new rubber but the chrome does not fit. I read the excellent article written by Dasadrew about the different sizes and it appears I have the old type which does not fit the new type of windscreen rubber. Since the new type of chrome is not available, my only option is to glue my existing one into place.

    Has anyone done this before?

If so, can you tell me what adhesive you used as I need one that is also a filler but dries quickly. The chrome is so flexible that it will have to be held in place and I hope to have 4 pairs of hands to hold it in place while the adhesive/filler goes off. I can't expect people to stand around for any length of time.

    Many thanks

my trusted screen fitter says that if the stainless trim doesn't go in with 30 mins for one half then he has, with customer permission, cut the return edge off the stainless trim and used sticky 3m pads to secure. It even sits flatter to the rubber, looks better and it less likely to stretch and tear the screen rubber in the upper corners

The weird thing for him is that everyone tells him how it should be done and he does these things for a very long time but 50% of stags will not accept the stainless trim back.

He has confirmed that he will never do a mk1 compact 1950s jaaag ever again, rubber in from the outside, glass in from the inside and then string.

I sympathise with the bond on shortcut.
Never done it myself…. But have fitted 3 sets of trims & screens.

suggest polyurethane sealant…. It’s ‘structural’ bonding.

id only be cutting off the seal lip, not the stainless trim.

would require duct tape to hold it down for the cure.

      could get messy.

Do you have the sort that jump onto the rubber though?

Ive fitted 4 chrome trims to cars, i use a rope round the rubber to lift the flap and push the trim in

I fitted the trim to the rubber before the screen went in worked a treat. I’m sure I read this on the forum somewhere would recommend it so much easier than when the screen is in place.

Many thanks for all the responses. I do like the suggestion from "Richardthestag" to cut one of the lips off the chrome as it would be a lot easier to slip one lip under the rubber which will help hold it in place while the adhesive dries. Never thought about double sided tape, I am wondering if it will be ok with all the Scottish weather.

When you say "Return Edge", is that the bigger or small lip on the Chrome strip?

Do you know how he cuts the lip off, with an angle grinder????

                Thank you all again.
