Or Dave might have been referring to the 5/16 inch UNF x 2 3/4 inch bolt HB822 which is in the driver's footwell, it fixes the bottom of the steering column to the bulkhead ? This could allow sideways movement of the column if not tight.

Thought I had better describle the play better so peeps dont advise incorrectlyOriginally posted by Philip Wardle View PostOr Dave might have been referring to the 5/16 inch UNF x 2 3/4 inch bolt HB822 which is in the driver's footwell, it fixes the bottom of the steering column to the bulkhead ? The play is when holding he steering wheel and doing a right to left motion or vice aversa there is about 10-12mm free movement/play before the wheel starts to move the steering.
There is no play in the upor down motion of the whole steering column,so I understand this rules out the lower column bush/bearing set
Thank you for clarification Phillip,I will check this tommorowLast edited by maverick; 11 October 2023, 18:22.

Hi Dave
By pinch bolt do you mean either one of these that tighten the UJs on the lower shaft, Bolt 5/16 UNF x 1 1/2" - GHF104 or Bolt 5/16 UNF x 1 3/4" - BH605141 ?

Dave, thanks the play is right there where at the side of your red circle in the UJ.It must only move by 1-1.5 mm ,but on the steering wheel it equates to 10-12 mmOriginally posted by DJT View Post

Hi StaggersOriginally posted by jbuckl View PostDon’t know if it’s related but on the other place (fb) I saw column wear of monumental hilarity.
no clamping washer or ring at all. Reach clamp not clamping. Huge movement in all directions.
worse than our soap box steering!
In trying to continually improve the stag,as mentioned play in the steering wheel when moved from left to right about 1/2 inch before any movement at the wheels.
Does anyone have no play at all before movement at the wheels ,is this possible ?
Thanks Mark

When the engine is off there is some play due to the torque bar that may not be appreciated by a tester with little classic experience, 1/2 inch at the outside of the steering wheel sounds about right. The way the control works relies on that to feed the pressure to the needed side.
Are you convinced that the top UJ has play? I found that placing my hand around it a wiggling the steering wheel was effective to detect any play.Terry Hunt, Wilmington Delaware
